Ulverston Road Mosque, South Lakes
With this project we have taken the essential elements of the mosque and work outwards from there. The prayer spaces are the most important features of all Islamic architectural projects, expansive in feel, allowing for an openness. The prayer halls in the western context mosques have to accommodate both female and male population, therefore circulation and ablution spaces are doubled. These spaces are required to be user-friendly, because the purification before the prayer itself is seen as an essential component to the Islamic prayer ritual. Most often modern mosques pay little attention to the washing facilities, but in traditional societies these areas were given care and attention.
Once the essential elements of the building are given enough consideration, other secondary functions can be branched off from this main programme. In this case we would be looking to incorporate a body washing facility and community activity spaces.
